I hope you had a great weekend. I enjoyed a bunch of family time with my now, “Party of 5.” My friend Jackie got us a gift for the girls and wrote that on the card. I thought it was cute.
We spent time at a local park (Fireman’s in Lindenhurst) yesterday with the kids. This was the same park we used to train our clients at before we had a physical location, 8 years ago. Wow, that took me back!
I’m a big believer in transformation from the inside out. We can learn all the tools in the world but if something is broken internally, we’ll be extremely limited.
Many people suffer from something called “Stinkin Thinkin.”
They tell themselves things like, “I’ll always be fat,” “I have bad genetics,” or “I’m just addicted to sweets.”
Here is a simple (not easy) 4 step process to overcoming negative or unproductive thoughts.
Step 1: Identify the thought and write it down
Step 2: Write down how the thought makes you feel
Step 3: Write down the answer to these 2 questions:
- Are you 100% certain this thought is true?
- Is this thought helpful or productive?
If your answer to either of those questions is no, the thought is not beneficial.
Step 4: Write down a different and more productive thought
Here’s a quick example using that format:
Step 1: “I can’t do this.”
Step 2: Discouraged, scared
Step 3: Not 100% certain it’s true and it is NOT productive
Step 4: New thought – I’m going to commit to the process, do my best each day, and use the support I have. I CAN do this.
Again, this process is simple. It’s just not easy. It will take time and work to replace negative thoughts. Keep at it and over time you will transform from the inside out.
